Understanding the UPSC CSE Exam Pattern

UPSC CSE Exam Pattern

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is the gateway to prestigious civil service careers in India. But for many aspirants, the exam pattern can seem like a complex maze. Here’s a breakdown of the UPSC CSE exam pattern, simplifying each stage for a smoother sail towards your dream career.

Three Stages to Glory

The UPSC CSE is a three-stage examination, testing your knowledge, analytical skills, and suitability for the role:

  1. UPSC Preliminary Examination (Prelims): This objective-type screening stage consists of two papers – General Studies Paper-I (GS Paper-I) and General Studies Paper-II (CSAT). Both papers are of 200 marks each, focusing on general knowledge, current affairs, aptitude, and reasoning abilities.

  2. UPSC Main Examination (Mains): Only shortlisted candidates from the Prelims get to write the Mains, a subjective exam with nine papers of 250 marks each (total 1750 marks). It delves deeper into various subjects like Indian Polity, Economy, History, Geography, Science & Technology, and Essay writing. You can also choose two optional subjects based on your expertise.

  3. UPSC Interview/Personality Test: The final stage assesses your personality, leadership qualities, and communication skills through a face-to-face interview carrying 275 marks.
